Artists Biography

Ayesha Malik Hussain (b. 1995)

Professionally known as Ayesha Malik, a multidisciplinary contemporary artist that specializes in photography and videography, sculpture, graphic design, printmaking, drawing and has experience with a wide range of other media. Malik was born in 1995 Actonville, South Africa and raised between Benoni and Johannesburg. After dropping out of a graphic design degree in her first year, Malik landed an internship and worked her way up to senior graphic designer which remained her position for five years thereafter.
Whilst still working full-time, she began studying towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Johannesburg in 2018. During 2021 Malik worked as a sculpture and welding tutor at the University of Johannesburg and obtained an Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR Certificate and an African Insights Certificate. She has worked at the Johannesburg Contemporary Art Foundation as a tour guide for exhibiting artists such as Shirin Neshat, Nandipha Mntambo, Berni Searle, Bharti Kher and Wangechi Mutu. Malik has created artworks and installations for the SAFTA award winning documentary series Devilsdorp (streaming on ShowMax). In 2022 Malik completed her fine arts degree, majoring in sculpture, printmaking, drawing, media and photo/videography. Maliks artworks explore themes of dystopian futures, culture, identity, emotion, religion and urban decay. Her present artistic focus is on creating bodies of artworks that explore her experiences of spiritual and emotional reflection and growth.
